The village church began as a monastery. It was later donated to Leyre. The charitable hospitals served pilgrims. There is a statue of St James in the church. No shop or restaurant. The bar next to the refuge will prepare meals if you order in advance. The next welcoming bar (with tapas) is in Urdaniz, 2km north on the C135.
Accommodation:
Refuge: Modern new refuge for 30 persons, a thoughtful initiative by the genial and hospitable mayor (alcalde) Don Santiago Zubiri Elizalde. He is well liked by pilgrims, a most helpful person. Situated in the town hall, the refuge has a kitchen and hot and cold showers. Canned and fresh foods available. After normal hours, the key can be got from the mayor in the house opposite. Camping space available.
Directions:
To enter village turn right, cross bridge and then turn left at church. Turn left onto road and proceed to the hamlet of Aquerreta. There is a fountain 1km away. Keep straight on down green lane to house with old weapons on its door. This house was probably built in 1747. Go downhill, cross minor tarred road at slightly staggered junction and keep straight on lane. The track takes you in and out of woods, parallel all the time with the main road below you to the right. Path descends steeply down steps. Continue close to and parallel with river, passing weir on right. Shortly after, you get to a modern bridge over the Agra at Zuriain.
